LinSig, developed by JCT Consultancy Ltd (JCT), is typically used to aid in the design and assess the operation of traffic signal-controlled junctions. The software uses a combination of geometric layout, traffic data and signal controller operation to reflect the way existing junctions work, and how any design proposals would operate if implemented. Linsig can be used for individual junctions as well as multiple junctions in a network with separate controllers.
A key functionality of the software is the optimisation of signal timings to either minimise the amount of delay in the junction/network or maximise its spare operating capacity. It enables models to be built relatively quickly and is useful in informing the design process of signalised junctions. The software is not able, however, to model the interaction between junctions where queues block back, and the also cannot directly replicate certain real life situations such as vehicle actuation (VA) or Microprocessor Optimised Vehicle Actuation (MOVA) signal operating systems.
