The Transport Research Laboratory developed empirical models in the 1980s using extensive observations of existing roundabouts and priority junctions. This led to the industry standard ARCADY and PICADY programs, which are now part of the integrated Junctions platform.

TMS use Junctions to provide detailed assessment of individual junctions or small groups of connected junctions. The program uses geometric measurements and traffic flow data to assess the capacity and queuing which would occur at each arm of the junction, and to provide an overview of the operation of the junction/network as a whole.
